This is the bonnet panel for the 88 inch Land Rover. It covers the engine bay and hinges at the front. If yours is dented, kinked at the hinge points, or rotten along the frame underneath, this is the part to sort it.

Why they go. The bonnet skin on these is aluminium, so it doesn’t rust the way steel does. The frame underneath it does. The frame is steel and it sits right where water collects. It rots along the edges and around the hinge mounts, and once the frame goes the panel loses its shape. The other common problem is denting. People sit on bonnets, lean on them, and drop things on them. A bonnet that’s been used as a workbench is rarely straight, and it shows when it’s closed.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Confirm it’s 88 inch. The 88 and 109 bonnets are different lengths. Measure before you commit.

  • Which model. Series and early Defender bonnets vary in shape and hinge setup. Check it suits yours.

  • Frame condition. Look at the frame along the edges and around the hinges. This is where rot starts.

  • Skin condition. Check for dents, kinks and cracks, especially around the hinge points.

  • Whether it’s been repaired. Fresh filler and paint can hide old damage.

  • Hinges. Ask whether they’re included or whether you reuse yours.

  • Finish. Bare, painted or restored. Match what you need.

One thing worth saying. A bonnet that’s been kinked at the hinges is hard to get right again. The metal stretches and the panel never sits flat. If the frame is rotten too, you’re looking at a repair that may not be worth doing. Ask for photos of the frame and the hinge area specifically, not just the top surface.

Also. Check your hinges and the bulkhead mounts before you fit a replacement. A bent hinge will twist a good bonnet, and worn mounts let it rattle. Sort those at the same time.

Fitting is a two person job. The panel is light but wide, and it’s easy to catch the wings or the screen surround while you’re lowering it. Line it up before you tighten the bolts.

You can buy this 88 inch bonnet from landrovergenuinepart.com. Order online, or email us first if you want to confirm fitment before you purchase. We’d rather check the details up front than have you send it back later.

When you get in touch, tell us your model, year and wheelbase. Ask for photos of the frame and hinges. That’s usually enough for us to confirm whether this is the right bonnet.

    Waylin –

“At last my original exhaust system on my 90 has given up and rotted through. I ordered a genuine exhaust system here and it arrived in five days. It was a good solid system, well packaged in sections with the clamps and gaskets, fitted by my local garage with no modifications needed. It sounds like a factory exhaust and that’s what I want on my Defender.”
