This is a towbar for the Freelander 2 with the electrics included. The towbar is the bar that bolts to the back of the vehicle and takes the tow ball. The electrics are the wiring and the socket that run the lights and the brakes on whatever you’re towing. Buying them together means you’re not hunting for the right wiring kit afterwards, and you know the two are meant to work as a set.

Why the electrics matter as much as the bar. People focus on the bar and forget the wiring. On a modern vehicle like the Freelander 2, you can’t just splice into the rear lights. The vehicle has a Canbus system that monitors the bulbs, and if you tap in the wrong way you get warning lights on the dash and faults. A proper wiring kit is designed for the vehicle and talks to the system correctly. This is the part that causes trouble on cheap installs, so check what’s included.

Why people fit one. Towing a trailer, a caravan, a boat or a small plant trailer. The Freelander 2 is rate to tow a decent weight for its size, and it’s a common tow vehicle. The other reason is a bike rack or a cycle carrier. Either way, the bar and the electrics have to be right.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Confirm it’s for the Freelander 2. Not the Freelander 1 or the Discovery Sport.

  • Whether it’s a fixed or detachable towbar. Detachable is neater and keeps the back of the vehicle clean, but it costs more. Fixed is cheaper and always there.

  • What the electrics include. A seven pin or thirteen pin socket, and the dedicated wiring kit. Check which.

  • Whether the electrics are vehicle specific or universal. Vehicle specific is what you want on a Freelander 2.

  • Condition. New or used. Ask.

  • What’s include. Bolts, brackets, the ball, the socket, the module. Ask, because these kits are often split.

  • Whether it needs coding. Some vehicles need the towbar function enabled in the software. Ask.

  • Towing weight. Check the rating suits what you plan to tow.

One thing worth saying. If the electrics are universal and not vehicle specific, think twice. On a Freelander 2 a universal kit can cause bulb warning faults and, in some cases, drain the battery. A dedicated kit costs more but it works with the vehicle rather than against it.

Also. If you’re fitting it yourself, the bar is heavy and the bolts need to be torque properly. Check the towing weight and the nose weight limits for your vehicle before you load it up, because a bar doesn’t change what the vehicle is rate to do.

“Pulley was wibbling and causing belt rubbings. Ordered a genuine one here and it arrived in four days, well packaged and with the new bolts included. It was fitted by my local garage and the belt runs true. With a TD5 the genuine is the only way to go and I’m happy with the fair lead-time and price.”
