Land Rover defender Side Step for Sale
This is a side step for a Defender. It bolts along the sill and gives you a step up into the cab. On a Defender the sill sits high and the door opening is tall, so getting in and out is a climb without one. It also takes the knocks the sill would otherwise take, which is the other reason people fit them.
Why people buy them. Two reasons, and both are practical. Access is the first. Kids, older passengers and anyone who isn’t tall will struggle to get in without a step. The second is protection. The sill is one of the first things to get scraped and dented, whether that’s from stones off the road or a car park pillar. A step sits out from the body and takes the hit instead.
What to check before you buy. Defenders ran from the early eighties to 2016, and the body changed across the years. Side steps are not universal. A step that fits a Td5 may not bolt onto a TDCi, and the Puma has its own mounting points. So confirm the model and the year before you order.
A few things to check:
-
Model and year. 90, 110 or 130, and which era. TDi, TD5, TDCi or Puma. They differ.
-
Fixed or retractable. Most Defender steps are fixed. Retractable ones are a different part and cost a lot more.
-
What’s included. Brackets and bolts. Ask. The brackets are often the hard part to find on their own.
-
Condition. Look for rust, bent tubes and damage around the mounting points. Steps take knocks, so many used ones are out of shape.
-
Finish. Black, silver or powder coated. Match what you need.
-
One side or a pair. Check what the listing covers.
One thing worth saying. If you’re buying used, check the brackets properly. The step itself is often fine while the brackets are rotten or bent. Brackets are the part that fails, and a step without good brackets is not much use.
Also. Don’t overtighten the bolts. The mounting points on the sill can crush if you swing on them, and a crushed mount is a bigger job than a loose bolt. Torque them properly and check them again after a few hundred miles, because steps work loose.
Fitting is simple. You can do it on a driveway with basic tools in under an hour. Just make sure the vehicle is on level ground and supported properly if you’re jacking it up.
You can buy this side step from landrovergenuinepart.com. Order online, or email us first if you want to confirm fitment before you purchase. We’d rather check the details up front than have you send it back later.
When you get in touch, tell us your model, year and whether you need one side or both. A photo helps. That’s usually enough for us to confirm whether this will fit.

“My L322 left me stranded with a dead battery and I needed an alternator fast. Ordered on a Tuesday, arrived Thursday, fitted Friday. The unit was boxed, stamped, and matched the original part number exactly. No core charge hassle, no fitting issues. For a 15-year-old Range Rover, finding genuine electrical parts this easily is a big deal.”
