Land Rover 300Tdi engine, gearbox and chassis for selected Defender rebuild, replacement and restoration projects. This combination is suitable for projects requiring compatible 300Tdi drivetrain and chassis components. Defender 90, 110 and 130 chassis specifications differ, and gearbox and mounting configurations must be checked carefully. Please confirm the engine details, gearbox type, chassis wheelbase, condition and included components before ordering.

Land Rover 300Tdi Engine, Gearbox and Chassis for Sale

This is a complete drivetrain and rolling chassis. A 300Tdi engine, the gearbox that came behind it, and the chassis they sit in. Buying all three together saves you hunting for parts that match, and it saves you wondering whether the bellhousing, the mounts and the engine-to-chassis fittings line up.

What you’re getting. The 300Tdi is the four cylinder diesel that replaced the 200Tdi and ran through the mid to late nineties. It’s mechanical, with a rotary injection pump and no ECU. That’s why people like it. It runs as long as it gets fuel and air, and there’s very little to go wrong electrically. The gearbox that came with it is usually the R380 five speed, which is strong and bolts straight to the engine. The chassis is the ladder frame the whole vehicle sits on.

Why buy them as a set. A 300Tdi from a Discovery has a different sump, pickup and manifold setup from one in a Defender. The chassis mounts differ too. If you buy an engine on its own and then find a chassis, you can spend weeks making things fit. Buying them together means the engine mounts, the gearbox crossmember and the bellhousing are already sorted.

What to check on the engine. The timing belt is the big one on a 300Tdi. If it’s not been changed on schedule and it snaps, the valves hit the pistons. Ask when it was last done and get proof. Check the injector pump, the lift pump and the turbo. Look for oil in the intercooler pipes, which points to turbo wear. The bottom end is tough, and the block rarely fails.

What to check on the gearbox. Fifth gear is the usual failure on an R380, so listen for a whine in fifth. Check the input gear splines on the transfer box if one’s included, because they wear where they meet the gearbox output shaft. Ask about the clutch and the flywheel while you’re at it.

What to check on the chassis. This is the part that decides whether the project is worth doing. Look at the rear crossmember, the outriggers, the bulkhead mounts and the sections above the rear axle. That’s where rot starts. Check for accident damage, bends and welded repairs that shouldn’t be there. If the chassis number is legible, check it.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Which vehicle it came from. Defender, Discovery or Range Rover. The fittings differ.

  • Whether the chassis has a V5. This matters if you’re building a road legal vehicle.

  • Condition of all three. Ask for photos.

  • What’s included. Turbo, pump, injectors, transfer box, axles, suspension. Ask what’s on it.

  • Whether it runs. A running engine you can hear is worth more.

  • Timing belt history.

  • Gearbox condition, especially fifth gear.

  • Chassis rust and repairs.

One thing worth saying. Buying an engine, gearbox and chassis together is usually a project, not a repair. If you’re swapping a failed engine, you probably don’t need the chassis. If you’re building a vehicle from parts, this is the sensible way to do it, because everything is already matched.

Also. A chassis with a V5 has legal implications around vehicle identity. Understand how that works before you buy, and make sure the numbers line up.

Fitting is a big job. Everything comes off and goes back on. Allow weeks if you’re doing it yourself.

You can buy this engine, gearbox and chassis from landrovergenuinepart.com. Order online, or email us first if you want to confirm the details before you purchase. Ask for photos of all three and the V5 if there is one. We’d rather check everything up front than have you find a problem later.

When you get in touch, tell us what you’re building and what you’ve already got. That’s usually enough for us to tell you whether this set will work.

Exhaust was blowing, found out it was manifold gasket. Ordered genuine one from here, arrived in 2 days, correct part number and correct material. Easy to fit and blowing has stopped, minor job really but correct item arrived. Straightforward purchase, no problems
