O2 Sensor [DENSO LR014012] for Sale

O2 Sensor [DENSO LR014012] for Sale. This is the oxygen sensor, also called a lambda sensor. It sits in the exhaust and measures how much oxygen is left in the gases coming out of the engine. The ECU uses that reading to work out whether the engine is running rich or lean, and adjusts the fuelling to suit. On a Defender it’s usually found on the TDCi and later engines, and sometimes on the TD5 depending on the setup.

Why they fail. The sensor lives in the exhaust, so it gets hot, then cold, then hot again, cycle after cycle. The tip gets coat in carbon and oil over time, and once it’s contaminate the reading drifts. It can also fail outright from coolant or oil getting into the exhaust, which happens if you’ve had a head gasket problem or a turbo seal leaking. When the sensor goes, the ECU stops trusting it and usually falls back to a default fuelling map. The truck still runs, but it’s not right. You’ll notice worse fuel economy, a rough idle, hesitation, or a warning light on the dash.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Confirm it’s LR014012. Match the number against your old sensor.

  • Which engine and year. O2 sensors vary by application, and the plug and thread have to match. Check it suits your truck.

  • Whether it’s a direct fit. Some sensors come with the plug, some are universal and need wiring. This one should be a direct fit, but confirm.

  • Number of sensors. Some engines run one, some run two or more. Check how many you need and whether this listing is for one or a set.

  • Condition. New or used. Ask.

One honest note. An O2 sensor fault code doesn’t always mean the sensor is bad. A vacuum leak, an exhaust leak before the sensor, or a misfire can all trigger the same code. If you’ve got a code reader, look at the live data before you replace anything. If the sensor is switching properly, the problem is elsewhere. Replacing a good sensor fixes nothing.

Fitting is usually straightforward. You need the right size spanner or a sensor socket, and it helps to warm the engine slightly first because the threads can be tight. Don’t overtighten it. And if the old one comes out covered in oil or coolant, find out why before you fit the new one.
