Defender Td5 engine 10P for Sale

This is a complete Td5 engine from the early run. The 10P is the first version of the Td5, fitted to Defenders from 1998 until roughly 2001, before the 15P came along. If you know Td5s, you know the two versions well, and the 10P has a following because it’s the simpler of the two.

Why people want a 10P. The 10P has a different injector harness setup and no EGR cooler in the same place as the later engines. A lot of owners consider it the better base for tuning, and it’s the one people ask for when they’re replacing a failed engine in an early Td5 Defender. The downside is age. These engines are now well over twenty years old, so condition matters more than which version it is.

The common failures on a Td5. The injector harness is the big one. Oil travels up the loom from the injectors into the ECU plug, and when it gets there the truck runs badly or won’t start. It’s a known fault and it’s fixable, but it tells you the engine has been run with the original harness. The other is the cylinder head. The Td5 head cracks and the injector seats wear. A head that’s been off and skim is fine if it was done properly. One that’s been skim too far isn’t. The bottom end is strong, and the block rarely fails.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Confirm it’s a 10P. The engine number and the injector harness setup tell you.

  • Mileage and history. Ask what it came out of and why.

  • Whether it runs. A running engine you can hear is worth more than one on a pallet.

  • Head condition. Ask if it’s been off, skimmed or replaced.

  • Injector condition. Ask if they’re original and whether the harness has been done.

  • What’s include. Turbo, manifolds, injectors, loom, ECU. Ask what comes with it and what you’ll need to swap over.

  • Compression. If it’s out of the vehicle, a compression test is worth having.

One thing worth saying. If you’re buying this to replace a fail engine, check what’s actually failed on yours first. A lot of Td5 problems that look like engine failure are the injector harness, the crank sensor, or the ECU. Those are cheap fixes. Don’t buy an engine for a fault that isn’t the engine.

Also. If you’re swapping a 10P for a 15P or the other way round, the ECU and the loom have to match. They don’t swap without work. If you’re keeping your original ECU, buy the same version engine.

You can buy this Td5 engine from landrovergenuinepart.com. Order online, or email us first if you want to confirm fitment and get details before you purchase. We’d rather answer questions up front than have you send an engine back later.

When you get in touch, tell us your model, year and what’s fail on your current engine. Ask for photos and details of the 10P. That’s usually enough for us to tell you whether it’ll work.

    Jazleen Stelios –

“The central locking on the drivers door failed completely. Ordered a genuine actuator from here and it arrived in three days. Had to remove the door card but was straight forward and fitted it all up. No more locking problems, the part number was the same as the one I took out. Good value for money and quick despatch.”
