Contact Set, Aftermarket RTC3270 for Sale

Contact Set [AFTERMARKET RTC3270]. This is an ignition contact set, also called points. It fits the distributor on older Land Rovers that still run a points ignition, which means a lot of Series models and early four cylinder engines. If you’re chasing a misfire, or the truck won’t start, and you’ve still got points in the distributor, this is one of the first things to check and often the first thing to replace.

Why points fail. They’re a wearing part. Every time the engine turns, the points open and close, and a small spark jumps across them. Over time that burns the contacts and pits the surface. The gap drifts, the spark gets weak, and the engine runs rough or stops altogether. It’s gradual, so you often don’t notice until it gets bad. A rubbing block also wears down, which closes the gap and makes it worse. This is why points get replaced on a service schedule, not just when they fail.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Confirm it’s RTC3270. That’s the part number to match against your old set. Cross reference it before you order.

  • Which distributor you have. Points sets aren’t universal. Check the distributor model and the engine.

  • Aftermarket or genuine. This one is aftermarket, which is cheaper. That’s fine for a part like this. Just be aware it may not last quite as long as a genuine set.

  • What’s included. Some sets come with the condenser, some don’t. Check whether you need one too, because they fail around the same time.

Fitting points is straightforward but fiddly. Set the gap to the correct figure with a feeler gauge, and check the dwell if you’ve got a meter. Get the gap wrong and the engine will run badly or not at all. If you’ve never done it, it’s worth reading up first, because a small mistake here stops the truck dead.

One thing worth saying. If you’re fitting new points, fit a new condenser at the same time. They’re cheap and they fail in similar ways. Changing one and leaving the other is a common mistake that leads to a breakdown a few weeks later.

You can buy this contact set from landrovergenuinepart.com. Order online, or email us first if you want to confirm the part number matches before you purchase. We’d rather check the details up front than have you send it back later.

When you get in touch, tell us your model, year and distributor type. That’s usually enough for us to confirm whether this is the right set.

    Steve –

“Older Discovery parts are getting scarce, so I was pleased to find a genuine propshaft still available. Arrived well-packed, balanced, and ready to fit. No vibration, no clunking — exactly what you’d expect from an OEM part. Delivery took a couple of days longer than I’d hoped, but communication was clear throughout. Solid supplier.”
