Land Rover Defender 90 Roll Bars (1991–2016) Online

These are the roll bars for the Defender 90. The 90 is the short wheelbase model, and on a short wheelbase truck the roll bar matters more than it does on a 110 or 130. There’s less body around you and less distance between you and whatever you hit. The roll bar is the structure that keeps the cab from crushing if the truck goes over.

Why people fit or replace them. Some Defenders came with a roll bar from the factory, some didn’t, and some had one that’s now rotten. The usual reason to buy is that the original has rusted through at the mounting points or along the tube. On a truck this age, that’s common. The other reason is a rebuild. If you’re putting a 90 back together, or converting a soft top, the roll bar is part of the structure and it needs to be sound.

Why the years matter. 1991 to 2016 covers the TDi, TD5 and TDCi eras. Across that run the 90 changed. The mounting points on the chassis and the body are not identical across all the years, and the shape of the bar changed with the model updates. So a bar from an early TDi won’t necessarily bolt straight onto a late TDCi. Confirm the year before you buy.

A few things to check before you buy:

  • Which year. Check it suits your truck, not just the model.

  • Condition of the tube. Look for rust, dents and cracks, especially at the bends and the mounting feet.

  • The mounting points. Check the feet and brackets are intact and not rotten or bent.

  • Whether it’s a full cage or a single hoop. They’re different things. Check which this is.

  • What’s included. Brackets, bolts, padding, the rear stays. Ask what comes with it.

  • Whether it’s been welded or repaired. Fresh welds on a roll bar are a warning sign.

  • Finish. Bare, painted or powder coated. Match what you need.

One thing worth saying. A roll bar with rust at the mounting feet is not worth repairing. The feet take the load, and a repair there is a weak point in the one part of the truck that’s supposed to save you. If the tube is sound and the feet are gone, walk away.

Also. If you’re fitting a roll bar to a truck that didn’t have one, check the chassis mounting points exist. Some 90s don’t have them, and you can’t just drill into the chassis anywhere. That’s a job for someone who knows what they’re doing.

Fitting is a two person job. The bar is heavy and awkward, and the bolts need to be torqued properly. Check the body mounts and the chassis while you’re under there.

You can buy these roll bars from landrovergenuinepart.com. Order online, or email us first if you want to confirm the year and fitment before you purchase. We’d rather check the details up front than have you send it back later.

When you get in touch, tell us your model, year and whether your truck already has a roll bar. A photo helps. That’s usually enough for us to confirm whether this will fit.

The clutch pedal is as good as new and it is very quiet. Supplied on time and correctly packed. Would definitely use them again.”

“Had a boost leak which was costing me power and economy. Ordered a genuine hose from here and it arrived in two days. Correctly formed and genuine, fitted it in twenty mins. Back to full power and economy, simple job but made easier with the correct genuine part. Will defiantly order from them again.”
