• Condition of the lens. Look for cracks, deep scratches and cloudiness that won’t polish out.

• Adjusters. Make sure they work. Broken adjusters mean a failed beam pattern.

• What’s included. Bulbs, holders, seals, the levelling motor. Ask what comes with them.

• Whether they’re genuine or aftermarket. Both work, but the fit and the finish vary.

One thing worth saying. If your headlights are just cloudy and there’s no water inside, try polishing them first. A kit costs a fraction of a pair of new units, and if the reflector is sound you’ll get most of the improvement. Replace them when the lens is cracked, the water is inside, or the adjusters are gone.

Fitting is straightforward. Bumper or grille off on some models, then the units unbolt. Check the wiring plugs and the earth points while you’re in there, because corroded connectors cause dim lights that people blame on the units.
